  • Classroom Bullying

    July 9, 2012

    Ten teacher candidates took members of the Western community by surprise with a heart-wrenching dramatization of the harmful effects of classroom bullying. "Bullies in the Classroom," a concurrent session at the 2012 Ignite conference, allowed staff and leaders across campus to share personal stories, common concerns, and information about bullying to ensure that schools will be safer for everyone.

    In May 2012, seven of our B.Ed. students participated in an International Teaching Exchange for their T2P (Transistion to Professional Practice) in Orléans, and the Centre du val region of France.


  • AQ Teaching Award Winners

    This year, John Emery and Jane Witte are each winners of the Additional Qualifications (AQ) Teaching Award, established in 2007 to recognize outstanding teaching in Western Education’s AQ program. John and Jane have taught for many years at the Faculty in both the Preservice and the Additional Qualifications programs. This year, they are both recognized for the vision they have for their courses and for the impact they have on the students they teach.


  • Western Education Partners for New Music Program

    Western Education has partnered with the Don Wright Faculty of Music, the London Catholic District School Board, and the Thames Valley District School Board in its new music education program, "Teaching the Way They Learn." On June 13th, at Montcalm Secondary School in London, Ontario, grade 7 to 10 music students launched the project with live music performances.


  • Celebrating Children's Mathematical Thinking Through Music

    For 17 years, Canadian multi-instrumentalist and singer Bob Hallett has played songs about East-Coast fishing and pub-life with his award-winning band, Great Big Sea. But on Thursday, May 26th, at the Regent Theatre in Oshawa, Ontario, Hallett turned his talents to singing songs about parallelism and infinity.


  • Media and Information Services Moves to New Location

    The Information and Media Services group has moved from the front office in the Faculty of Education building to Room 1138. This move anticipates the future opening of the Education and Technology Centre (ETC) later this year.


  • Visionary Ideas Shared at Ministry of Education Forum

    May 18, 2012

    On May 8, scholars from Western Education presented sessions at the Ministry of Education’s "Visions for Learning in the 21st Century" at the Public Library in Toronto. Presenters from across the province gave sessions on a range of current pedagogical issues, from meeting the needs of Muslim students in public schools to using Web 2.0 tools for instruction and assessment.


  • T2P and Community Service Learning

    In late April and early May, 67 Teacher Candidates from Western Education traveled to Laredo, Texas, and to Monte Cristi, in the Dominican Republic, to serve for one week with a local chapter of a non-profit organization.


  • Pizza Lunch for Teacher Candidates

    On May 11, a farewell pizza lunch event was held outside the Western Education building for nearly 100 of Teacher Candidates. The event celebrated the Teacher Candidates' completion of their "Transition to Practice" (T2P) practica, the final component required to graduate with their Bachelor of Education.

  • Inclusive Education Student Research Awards

    The Centre for Inclusive Education awards graduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Education who will be completing a thesis on a topic related to the inclusive education of students with special needs. This year, the Centre is pleased to announce three winners of the 2012 Centre for Inclusive Education Research Award. The winners will receive their certificates at the Awards ceremony following convocation on June 15th.

    Last week, Western University was awarded the Neighbors, Friends and Families Workplace Champions certificate for educating its employees about domestic violence.


  • Aboriginal Education Day

    February 13, 2012

    In a reversal of roles, students taught teachers in one of many Aboriginal Education Day workshops on Friday, February 10. Youth from Antler River Elementary School (located in Chippewas of the Thames First Nation community) used traditional dancing and drumming to promote further learning about Aboriginal education among teacher candidates and other educators in the Faculty of Education.
