Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholar Eligibility

  • Hold a full-time permanent academic position at the university level
  • Have a host faculty member
  • Be able to demonstrate English language proficiency for academic purposes (able to work in English with faculty colleagues and with graduate students; able to give oral presentations in English) 

Host Faculty Member Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a full-time faculty member in the Faculty of Education with a research-eligible appointment.
  • If the host faculty member no longer holds an eligible appointment at the University during the award period, the grant will be cancelled, and the remaining recoverable funds will be returned to the common fund.
  • Faculty members who are retired, part-time or seconded to the Faculty are not eligible to apply for these funds.

Visiting Scholars Funding Applications for Short-Term

Visiting Scholar

Support outstanding international scholars.
  • Value: Travel to and from London, Ontario, accommodations, and meals will be subsidized up to a maximum of $3000. An honorarium for the visiting scholar will be covered up to a maximum of $500.
  • Deadline: May 1, 2025, before 4 p.m.

Visiting Scholar - EU

Support outstanding scholars from European institutions.
  • Value:  Travel to and from London, Ontario, accommodations, and meals will be provided up to a maximum of $7000.  An honorarium for the visiting scholar will be covered up to a maximum of $500.
  • Deadline: May 1, 2025, before 4 p.m.

Visiting Scholar – UNESUM

Support outstanding scholars from Ecuador's Universidad Estatal del Sur de Manabí.
  • Value:  Travel to and from London, Ontario, accommodations, and meals will be provided up to a maximum of $7000.  An honorarium for the visiting scholar will be covered up to a maximum of $500.
  • Deadline: May 1, 2025, before 4 p.m.

Funding-Requested Applications (short-term; 6 months or less)
  • Priority Deadline: May 1, before 4:00 PM. Applications received by this deadline will receive full consideration.
  • Rolling Applications: After May 1, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all funds are allocated.
Fully Funded Applications
  • Fully funded applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year. However, please note that reviews during May are at the discretion of the program area coordinators.

How to Start

  • Step 1: Find a host faculty member.
  • Step 2: Complete your package and submit it to your host faculty member.
  • Step 3: The complete package should be submitted by the host faculty member to:
  • Step 4: A Letter of Invitation will be composed and sent to the Visiting Scholar for acceptance. After the Letter of Invitation is accepted in writing, it should be submitted to Evangeline Castillo at vangie.castillo@uwo.ca, Education Research Office at edu-researchoffice@uwo.ca, and the host faculty member.

Host Faculty Member Responsibilities

  • The host faculty member should submit the visiting scholar's complete application a minimum of 8-12 months before the scholar's anticipated arrival.
  • The host faculty member or unit is required to provide a speed code to facilitate the payment of the employer compliance fee of $230.
  • The host faculty members have a legal obligation per Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The faculty host must actively engage in the relevant business during the scholar's employment period. The host must remain present at the University, and if absent for an extended period, arrangements should be made for another faculty member to assume the formal responsibility.
  • The host faculty members are expected to integrate the visiting scholar into academic life, involving them in various activities beyond research presentations, such as lectures, meetings, social events, and student thesis observations.

Visiting Scholar Responsibilities

  • If required, upon arrival, the scholar must enroll in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP).
  • The scholar is accountable for all expenses related to the visit unless explicitly specified otherwise.
  • Scholars are obligated to adhere to Western University's rules and regulations.
  • Visitors must comply with all federal and provincial laws, and regulations, as well as university policies and procedures.
  • Scholars must adhere to all applicable confidentiality and intellectual property rules.
  • Scholars must be fully qualified and have obtained the necessary approvals to conduct the specified research.
  • As part of the visit, the scholar must participate in at least two activities involving Western faculty, staff, and/or students. These activities may include:
    • Serving as a guest lecturer in graduate courses.
    • Delivering a public lecture.
    • Hosting a seminar for faculty and/or graduate students.
    • Participating in meetings with faculty and graduate students to foster academic exchange.
    • Engaging in research, including dissemination and/or grant preparation.

Privileges

The visiting scholar will be issued a Visiting Scholar Card and will have access to Western libraries.
