Fiftieth anniversary farewell at annual Teacher Appreciation Football Game

Western education community members gathered at the pre-game tailgate party.

Though the Laurier Golden Hawks beat out the Mustangs at last year’s Teacher Appreciation Football Game in October, Western Education alumni, students and friends displayed no shortage of purple pride as they hoisted handmade signs from the stands.

Prior to the game, Faculty of Education attendees gathered sporting their finest Western merch at the John George Althouse Faculty of Education Building for a tailgate party to mark the end of a year of celebrations for the faculty’s fiftieth anniversary.

Guests had the opportunity to look through old yearbooks and historical documents and enjoyed several spirited games of cornhole while connecting with old and new friends.

Dean Donna Kotsopoulos threw the opening coin toss at the game, which was co-hosted by outgoing Western Mustangs Football Team Head Coach Greg Marshall, BEd ’85.

Kotsopoulos and Marshall, who are both Western Education alumni themselves, have hosted the game each year in honour of teachers in our community.

Once again this year, London Executive Sedan Service, owned by Dražen Ivanišević, BA ‘10, generously sponsored the day’s festivities.

While the Mustangs suffered a loss of 60 to 13 to close out the regular season, Kicker Brian Garrity, current Faculty of Education student, set a new OUA and Football program record, scoring his 443rd point of his Mustangs career.

We’re grateful to all who joined us to cheer on the Mustangs. We look forward to celebrating with our graduates and friends of the faculty again next year.
