Curriculum Studies and Studies in Applied Linguistics

I am a second year PhD candidate within the Curriculum Studies and Studies in Applied Linguistics ARC.

I’m fascinated by the endless possibilities of STEM education. However, I see that it is unfortunately very disconnected from social values and tags along a narrow business discourse with which it is promoted. My Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship has enabled me to discover the potential advantages of seeking help from social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship is also connected to a business discourse which provides a common language with STEM, but it is also rich in what STEM education lacks, such as empathy. By bringing these two concepts together, I seek to link STEM students to social change, so they can see and experience first hand, how their skills can be used to create social value.

I am currently an active volunteer for the graduate student bodies here at Western, and a volunteer at a close-by STEAM Center; enjoying every minute of it. Doing research which is closely tied to the community and can translate into actual solutions is something I truly believe in.
