During her time as PhD student, Gabrielle Young experienced first-hand what a career in academia might look like. From research to teaching to her active involvement in committee work, she was able to take on a variety of roles that supported her doctoral studies.
As her program approached completion, she had a acquired a range of skills and networks of support that assisted her in transitioning from a Doctoral Candidate to an Assistant Professor at a leading Canadian university. She credits the relationships she gained and the experiences she encountered at Western as being key to unlocking a range of academic opportunities.
"Western did a great job of ensuring I not only had the skills but the first-hand experience to become a full-time academic. As a doctoral student, I really felt like I was part of the academic community and part of the institution. The calibre of this degree helped make me mobile, so I had options. Western is known internationally – it’s a degree and a reputation you can carry with you, anywhere you want to go. Thanks to Western, the support of a great supervisor, and the knowledge gained from quality instruction, I landed my dream job in Newfoundland. I hike the East Coast Trail whenever the weather lures me to it. A PhD from Western’s Faculty of Education truly does give you the option to choose your future."
