August 14, 2026

Immaculate Namukasa.

By unanimous recommendation, Immaculate Namukasa, PhD, has been reappointed as Associate Dean, Graduate Education, for a second five-year term.

“Dr. Namukasa has provided exemplary leadership to one of Western's largest and most complex graduate programs,” said Dean Donna Kotsopoulos.

“During her first term, she successfully led complex cyclical reviews, resulting in significant renewal of policies and procedures. She also oversaw the largest expansion of graduate programming at Western.”

Namukasa joined Western’s Faculty of Education in 2004. She is a professor of mathematics education, curriculum and pedagogy. From 2017 to 2021, she served as a distinguished teaching fellow with Western’s Centre for Teaching and Learning and has contributed to more than 20 university and education committees, task forces and advisory boards.

“Dr. Namukasa’s leadership extends well beyond graduate education. She is a deeply valued member of the faculty’s leadership team, providing strategic advice on budgeting, institutional planning, alumni relations and governance,” said Kotsopoulos.

“She is also highly engaged in institutional leadership, championing initiatives that support Black scholars and student engagement. She leads by example and inspires excellence across our community.”

Namukasa completed her undergraduate studies at Uganda’s Makerere University before earning a PhD in Secondary Education and Teaching from the University of Alberta. Prior to her doctoral studies, she held several curriculum leadership roles in secondary school mathematics in Uganda. She previously served as an editor for the Ontario Mathematics Gazette and the Math + code ‘Zine and a guest editor of a Springer international Journal, ZDM.

Alongside her teaching and leadership responsibilities, Namukasa maintains an active research program, publishing extensively, securing external research and providing exceptional mentorship to graduate students. Her research focuses on mathematics teacher education and professional development, the integration of technology and computational thinking in mathematics education, maker education learning tools and tasks, and curriculum and pedagogical reforms.

In recognition of her innovative and impactful leadership, Namukasa received the 2025 Angela Hildyard Recognition Award for Emerging Leaders from the Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada. The award honours leaders who have made exceptional contributions to advancing their institution and higher education more broadly.

Namukasa’s second term as Associate Dean, Graduate Education began on July 1, 2026.

“I am deeply honoured by this opportunity to continue serving Western’s Faculty of Education and its graduate community,” said Namukasa.

“Leadership is largely about bringing forth conditions for others to thrive. I look forward to working with colleagues, students and partners to build on our shared progress as we support the next generation of professionals, scholars and leaders.”

Dean Kotsopoulos extends her appreciation and gratitude to the review committee for its thoughtful work throughout the renewal process and thanked members of the Faculty of Education committee for their enthusiastic engagement and support.
