Lucky for some!

August 13, 2010

Professor Immaculate Namukasa was interviewed by London’s A-Channel news today on the subject of a local family whose eight family members were all born on the 13th day of a month!

Dr. Namukasa is a Professor in the area of Mathematics, Science and Technology. She says that one way of explaining the probability of this happening is by using dice: If you roll a die 8 times, what is the probability of getting the same number (say 5) all 8 times: 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6 x1/6?

For the birthday problem, there are approximately 30 days in a month so 8 people in a row born on the 13th of a month is: 1/30 x 1/30 x 1/30 x 1/30 x 1/30 x 1/30 x 1/30 x 1/30!
