Making less than 10

Grade 2 students explored all the possible ways of solving number sentences like _ + _ < 10.

How many solutions are there?

Less than 10 how many sums,
That’s what I want to know,
2+3, 3+4 ,But there’s more
6+1, 4+0, how many more in the list
3+ 5 and 1 + 6, When do I stop?
Need a way to keep track
Yeah I Need a way to keep track
To find all the sums, is all that I ask
‘cause what I want you to understand…..

I’d go out of my way for math
I’d miss recess and lunch for math
I’d wait all day in a line for math
You know I’d do anything for math
I would do all this in the rain
Till all the sums fill up all of my brain
Yes I would do all this for math but I need,
Your help with this sums chain

2+4, 4+2 I’m losing track of what I have
But then you say hey get back to where you started from
0+0, 0+1, yeah that’s the start,
0+2, 0+3, and keep going
To 0+9, then 1+0, 1+1 and on and on
To 1+8, I see the pattern, I see it now
10 ways with 0, 9 ways with 1,
8 ways with 2
That’s the way to keep track, 10 + 9 + 8
All the way down to 1
That’s 55 ways To find all the sums,
‘cause now that I understand this math

I’d go out of my way for math
I’d miss recess and lunch for math
I’d wait all day in a line for math
You know I’d do anything for math
I would do all this in the rain
Till all the sums fill up all of my brain
Yes I would do all this for math but I need,
Your help with this sums chain
