MATH & SCIENCE CAMP

Song 5 - Will it float, will it sink?

Grades 2-3 children explored the following: Have you ever noticed a rock is easier to lift in water than out of water? Why is this? And why do some things float while other sink? Is it that they are heavier or is there something else going on? We also read the story The Secret of the Stone, where Wolf is trying to lift a large stone lying in a hollow, to uncover the secret message underneath. The Three Little Piggies use a clever idea to help Wolf.

Will it sink or will it float?
The density in the stone
Will make it sink all alone
Gravity pulls it down
‘Cause it’s more dense
Will it sink, will it float?

Science and atoms
Sticks float Rocks sink
Gravity brings things down
But oil is less dense than water
Oil is less dense
Will it sink or will it float?

Fricky fricky fricky science
Fricky fricky fricky rocks
Oil in water
Fricky fricky fricky  science
And I want to know
Will it sink or will it float

Sub, sub, sub, sub
It’s short for submerge
It means going under water
I have a stone
It weighs 1000 grams
Sub, Sub, Sub, Sub

In water it feels lighter
But heavier out of water
The spring scale read
1000 grams
In the water
It read fewer grams

Fricky fricky fricky science
Fricky fricky fricky rocks
Heavy out of water
Fricky fricky fricky science
Fricky fricky fricky rocks
Lighter submerged
