MATH & SCIENCE CAMP

Song 2 - Refraction action

Grades 2-3 children explored how a stick in the water appears to bend on break. What else changes direction? We explored toy cars rolling down a ramp: when the right wheel hits a bump (a stick), the right wheel slows down, and the car turns to the right. The same thing happens when sledding in the snow: if you drag your foot on the right side, the sled turns right. We also read the story The Secret of the Broken Spear, where Little Bear keeps missing fish in the creek with his spear, until he discovers the secret of the broken spear!

Light bends
It turns
Like sledding
With a foot in the snow

A car
That hits a gravel patch
And the wheels’
Speeds don’t match

A lifeguard
Her surfboard
Half in the water
She thinks it’s broken

I aim at a fish
By the pier
But always
Miss with a spear

Light  plays
Tricks with my eyes
My spear seems broken
I’ll settle for some fries

I look up
At the rainbow
action
And I think, Refraction!
