Stories in School Mathematics: from proofs to productions

Dr. Nathalie Sinclair Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education Department of Mathematics, Michigan State University

Abstract: Using distinctions offered by the cultural and literary critic Roland Barthes with respect to literary works, I will discuss some of the shifts that 'on-line' mathematics (including web-based and desktop software interactions) could challenge, support and evoke in more conventional mathematical texts. In particularly, I will explore the possibilities and desirability of students as protagonists of their own mathematical stories and as producers and writers of mathematical texts.
