New Literacies-Halves and Wholes: What is Really Important about New Media?

Andrea A diSessa Graduate School of Education University of California, Berkeley, USA

Abstract: Many new things are exciting; few are deep and deeply influential. In this talk, I will frame the discussion with the idea of "computational literacies" in general, and then proceed to cases that I see as fundamental, and cases that I believe are transient and more "sizzle" than substance. Central concerns are expressive power, and individual and social empowerment. Surprisingly, these issues are often lost on technologists and enthusiasts, even if they are inescapable for educators.
