Derek Haime EdD ’16
Field of Educational Leadership; Superintendent of Education, Waterloo District School Board
In his role as Superintendent of a large Ontario school board, Derek Haime helps address and solve complex problems in a range of educational, and often political, situations. With a number of schools in his district, broad organizational change is a challenging, but necessary, part of his role. It takes careful planning, teamwork and a great deal of research to institute large-scale change.
In his time as an EdD student at Western, Derek learned the skills and approaches necessary to help him succeed in his career as an educational leader.
"My research skills have increased exponentially, as has my appreciation for the fact that anyone can be a researcher. The realization that I can get everyone involved, that teachers can look at classrooms as laboratories and conduct their own research, has been tremendous. Teachers typically haven’t been the ones out there doing research, and this approach provides an opportunity to engage the entire profession in an evolving body of knowledge to help institute real, positive change."
