The Diploma in Education (Technological Education) program prepares candidates with a technical background to teach broad-based technology in secondary schools.  It is a one year, full time program that runs from September until April.  Candidates who hold an acceptable undergraduate degree will receive a Bachelor of Education degree upon completion on the program.  To apply, you must present documented training, experience, and qualifications related to one of the following broad-based Technological Education areas:

  • Communications Technology
  • Computer Technology
  • Construction Technology
  • Green Industries
  • Hairstyling and Aesthetics
  • Health Care
  • Hospitality and Tourism
  • Manufacturing
  • Technological Design
  • Transportation

Admission Requirements

To be eligible to apply to this program, applicants must meet the requirements below:

  • A secondary school diploma or the equivalent;

  • Proof of competency in the area of technological studies to which you are applying.  Competency is demonstrated by formal technical education or training or by completion of a trade qualification, professional designation, or similar credential;
  • Wage-earning experience.  You will need to provide documentation for one of the following:
    • at least five years of full time wage-earning experience, including business or industrial experience, where the candidate used skills and knowledge in the area of technological education selected for his or her optional courses;
    • at least two years of wage-earning experience and successful completion of a post-secondary education program acceptable to the College that includes at least six semesters of academic studies, where the experience and education used the candidate’s skills and knowledge in the area of technological education selected for his or her optional courses; or
    • a combination of wage-earning experience and education that totals at least five full years, of which two years must be wage-earning experience in their chosen area, no less than four months of which is continuous employment.

Selection of Candidates

Applicants seeking admission to the program are selected on a competitive basis.  Preference will be given to those with formal apprenticeship (i.e., Certificates of Apprenticeship and Qualification), technician, or technologist training who can demonstrate expertise in more than one occupation housed within their broad-based Technological Education teaching subject.

Communications Technology

Communications Technology:  includes the study of electronic, live, and graphic communications.

Computer Technology

Construction Technology

Construction technology programs:  includes the study of residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, and other built environments, including the systems required to maintain and service them.

Hospitality services: includes the study of tourism and guiding, travel and accommodation, food preparation and serving, and other hospitality issues.

Manufacturing Technology

Manufacturing technology:   includes the study of product design, process and production planning, manufacturing processes, and quality control.

Technological Design

Technological design:  includes the in-depth study of a variety of design processes that may be used in solving any technological challenge or problem.

Transportation

Transportation technology:  includes the study of transportation by land, water, air, and space, from the point of view of personal transportation, mass transit systems, and the transportation of freight and other objects.

Preparing Your Application

  1. Contact your former high school and community college to have them send your transcripts directly to the Preservice Office of the Faculty of Education.  Ontario college/university transcripts may be ordered by using the Transcript Request Form in the TEAS application.
  1. Document all of the technical wage-earning experience you report on this form.  Teaching or sales experience cannot be used to satisfy the wage-earning experience requirement.  For each experience you cite, you must attach an original, signed, dated letter on official company letterhead, written by a supervisor familiar with your work.  The letter must include:
  • signature of supervisor familiar with your work;
  • the duration of employment, including start and end dates;
  • a clear indication of whether the employment was full or part-time.  Part-time hours must be specified for each week worked.); and
  • the name of the position and a description of the nature of your employment (job description), providing specific statements of the skills used in the position.

Work experience without supporting documentation cannot be considered.

NOTE:  Ask your employer for two original copies of each letter.  Please submit one letter and retain the remaining one.  You will need these original documents later on in the process of becoming a teacher.

In cases where it is impossible to provide the above documentation (such as bankruptcy or closing of business, death, or retirement of owner), the following documents must be provided:

  • an original sworn statement, signed by a commissioner of oaths, describing the reason why this information is not available; and
  • an original sworn statement, signed by a commissioner of oaths, providing the duration of employment, start and end dates, and the nature of employment (providing specific statements of the skills used in the position; and
  • copies of T-4 tax forms that support the duration and place of employment noted in the sworn statement, or a statement from an accountant, confirming income.

If you were self-employed, you must provide the following documents:

  • an original sworn statement, signed by a commissioner of oaths, indicating that you were self-employed and specifying the duration of employment, the start and end dates, and the nature of duties performed (providing specific statements of the skills used in the position; and
  • a copy of business licence or registration supporting the duration of employment noted in the sworn statement; and
  • copies of income tax assessments (indicating self-employment) supporting the duration of employment noted in the sworn statement or a statement from an accountant confirming income or an annual report; and
  • at least one letter (representing the period of self-employment) from a major supplier attesting to materials purchased and/or a client attesting to the work completed.
