Bachelor and Diploma Program

General Information on B.Ed and Dip.Ed. Programs at the Faculty of Education, UWO

To help you become a teacher, the Faculty of Education offers a one year Bachelor of Education or Diploma in Education (Technological Studies) program. It is a full-time, in-class program that runs from September until April.  When applying, you must decide whether your academic background, experience, and interests suit you best for elementary or secondary school teaching.

There are four program routes to consider:

Primary Junior (JK to Grade 6) & PJ FSL
Junior Intermediate (Grades 4-10)
Intermediate Senior (Grades 7-12)
Technological Studies (Grade 7-12)

Western’s Faculty of Education will support you from your initial interest in teacher education, through your graduation from our program, to your goal to be a practising teacher.

If you choose Western, your program of study will include:

  • a common core course, Foundations in Education
  • two teaching and learning theory courses directly related to the grade levels and subjects you wish to teach
  • four specialized quarter-courses, including one focusing on the education of exceptional students
  • a practicum with three components: ten weeks of student teaching divided into three blocks, a weekly practicum day, and a two-week "Transition to Professional Practice" in the final two weeks of April
  • Professional Development and Career Support Search

Many resources in the Faculty support you along the way. To prepare you for a career as a teacher, we hold regular employment seminars which give practical advice and assist you to develop a professional network. The Media Production Centre and Computer Services guide you in the preparation of interesting and informative materials for the classroom. Our Library includes up-to-date resources, such as current curriculum guides.

Graduates from our B.Ed. or Dip.Ed. (Technological Studies) program are recommended for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).

Our Six-Credit B.Ed. and Dip.Ed. (Tech.) Program
