Intermediate / Senior Teaching Subjects
Intermediate-Senior students are required to register for courses in the two teaching subjects in which they were admitted.
Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Art 30
An exploration of current and historical theories of art education, including conditions
necessary for an effective art program. A focus on teaching techniques and curriculum development.
Special attention to feminist, postmodernist, and multicultural issues in art education, and
to the role of imagery in contemporary culture.
Four hours per week, 1 credit.
Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Biology 30
An introduction to curriculum and pedagogy in science with particular emphasis on
biology. A focus on pedagogical practice and theoretical perspectives on science teaching,
the nature of science, and cognitive, behavioural and social theories of science learning and
adolescent development. Ontario secondary science curricula are also examined.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Business Studies (Accounting) 30
Curriculum and instruction in accounting in secondary schools. Emphasis on instructional
strategies, student learning, assessment and evaluation, and current issues and developments
in accounting education. Integration of computer technology.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Business Studies (Marketing) 32
Curriculum and instruction in marketing, merchandising, and entrepreneurship in secondary
schools. Emphasis on instructional strategies, student learning, assessment and evaluation,
and current issues and developments in marketing education. Integration of computer technology.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Chemistry 31
An introduction to curriculum and instruction in chemistry in the Intermediate-Senior
divisions. Students design and critique instructional approaches based on a consideration of
the nature of science and science education. Attention to constructivist, cognitive, behavioural
and social theories of learning, and to motivation, student diversity and classroom management.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Computer Studies 38
Curriculum and instruction in computer studies in secondary schools. Emphasis on instructional
strategies, student learning, assessment and evaluation, and current issues and developments
in computer studies education. Integration of software applications and programming languages.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Dramatic Arts 31
An introduction to current models of drama education, conditions for an effective
drama program, and teaching strategies and curricula. An emphasis on competent, reflective
practice as well as contemporary issues in drama education. Theories of learning, teaching,
and integration are linked with drama in a classroom setting.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior English 30
An introduction to the historical and contemporary theories and practices of teaching
English/Language Arts, Grades 7-12. Literature, literary theory, cultural/media studies, the
sociology and psychology of literacy(ies) and language development, as well as curriculum design,
implementation and assessment are included.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Family Studies 34
A focus on the theoretical premises of planning and implementing suitable curricula
in the various areas of Family Studies, and on instructional strategies, learning activities,
and curriculum development. Attention to resources, assessment and evaluation procedures, and
current issues in Family Studies.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior French 30
Methods of teaching French as a second language, grades 7-12. Students are introduced
to theories of modern language learning and pedagogy applied to curriculum delivery and development.
Motivation, classroom management, and student diversity in the modern language classroom will
be addressed.

Curriculum and instruction in secondary school geography. A focus on curriculum design
and approaches to teaching and learning including use of geotechnologies. Examination of resources,
assessment and evaluation procedures, and current issues in geography and social science education.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior History 33
A critical examination of curriculum and instruction in history at the intermediate-senior
level. A focus on approaches to teaching and learning, resources, assessment and evaluation,
and on current issues and developments in history and social science education.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Individual & Society for Secondary Schools 35
Curriculum design and implementation for Individual and Society, a Contemporary Studies
course in Ontario Secondary Schools. A focus on instructional strategies, learning activities,
resources, assessment and evaluation procedures, and current issues in contemporary social
studies.
Four hours per week, 1 credit

Methods of teaching German in the secondary school. Students are introduced to theories

An introduction to the theory and practice of the teaching of mathematics in secondary
schools. Integration of relevant ideas and content from psychology, sociology and mathematics
education. Offers students the background to critically appraise curriculum documents, examine
issues in mathematics education reform, and develop expertise in teaching.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Music (Vocal) 33
A critical examination of contemporary learning theories in music education, grades
7 through secondary school. Emphasis on pedagogy, curriculum design, development and assessment,
resources and repertoire in vocal music, and teaching in the diverse classroom.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Intermediate/Senior Music (Instrumental) 32
The development of teaching strategies for contemporary instrumental techniques and
curriculum, with appropriate resources. An emphasis on competent, reflective practice. Theories
of learning, teaching, and integration are linked with music-making in classroom settings.

evaluation techniques for secondary school physical education. Approaches to curriculum development

on physics. A focus on pedagogical practice and on the theoretical perspectives in science,

approach requiring teachers to assume responsibility for their own professional growth.

Teaching and Learning Theory in Religious Education for Roman Catholic Secondary Schools 39
The theory and practice of religious education in Ontario Catholic schools. Curriculum
in the areas of Sacred Scripture, Church teaching, morality, spirituality, and family life
education are examined. Instructional strategies, resources, assessment and evaluation, religious
literacy, critical thinking, and social responsibility in a multi-faith society are also addressed.
