A gift comes to Bridges

September 22, 2009

For many marginalized women, the Bridges Project: Women’s Links to Learning in the Faculty of Education, has been a gift in the form of the opportunity to get a high school education. And now the Counseling Foundation of Canada has recognized the importance of the program with a gift of $67,000 over two years.

The program allows women, most of whom have come from an abusive environment, not only to earn a high school equivalency but also to learn basic life skills, to gain confidence and, for some, to pursue post-secondary education.

Susan Rodger, Psychologist and Associate Professor, described by one of Bridges’ recent graduates as “Saint Susan,” will, along with her team, use the funds to create a manual and resource binder for counselors and educators working in the context of community- based alternative education programs.
