I'm from Math that makes me happy
We used George Ella Lyon's poem Where I'm From as a starting point for children telling stories about math. Children worked in small groups to list ideas on the theme of "math that makes me happy". Their ideas were combined thematically to form a poem. Then students worked with aboriginal performance artists Tracy Bone, JC Campbell and Dave Mowat, to develop live performances to be shared with their community.

I’m from Math that makes me Happy (download the mp3 file)
Candles on my birthday cake
A hundred birthdays
5050 candles make
I like mad minute math
I do them so well
Money math makes me happy
Adding, counting
Do I have enough?
I like money math
I get to keep it when I’m done
I love math in a song
It helps me understand when I’m done
And everyone is involved, I love math
With protractors
I measure angles
It’s so much fun, I can’t deny
I like word problems
With more than one answer
I always get them right
I know for sure
Candy math, money math
Multiplication the fun way
I can’t get enough
Constructing angles
Makes me happy
Obtuse, acute, and right angles
I love math in a song
It helps me understand when I’m done
And everyone is involved, I love math, I love math
