How Parents Can Get Involved With
Family Math
If you are a parent interested in enrolling in Family Math, you might want to consult our Early Years Coordinators list or our Grades 2-5 Coordinators list (see links above) to determine if there is a program operating in your area.
If no program exists in your area, then you might want to contact a person on one of the coordinator lists to see if they would be willing to come to your community and train volunteers. For an understanding of what might be involved, click on Site Leaders (see link on the left).
If you are home schooling your children, you might simply want to download our Early Years Resource Book or our Grades 2-5 Resource Book and use the activities from these resources. There is also Esso Family Music for the early grades.
There are many other good websites for parents to use with their children. Some of them can be found on our Great Math Websites page (see link on the left).
There is ample evidence available to show that children do better in school when parents are actively involved. One of our articles you might like to read is Children and Their Parents: Learning Math Together and Having Fun..
Here is what some of our parents have told us:
Family Math is a night out for the family and a chance to spend quality time with your children. There are a variety of activities and you don't have to be good at math to do them. The program leader is wonderful and doesn't make you feel stupid. It is free and there is free food. You can be home by 7:30 and have the children in bed by 8:00. Everyone should take Family Math because it is so useful.
Thank you for this program. I am really impressed because I am learning, and my mind is more open to math - it's fun! My son is recognizing what multiplication really means and our family is now having regular conversations about math. It is pleasant, even homework sessions are more positive and fun.
Suzanne just loves Family Math and I am having fun too. We do all the activities in the booklet and there is no longer any yelling and screaming. It can actually be fun to do math activities at home. Before it was too frustrating, but now we have fun. I can help Suzanne with math by playing the games with her. I see just a little bit of change in Suzanne's attitude towards math. She still gets discouraged at school but she finds Family Math totally enjoyable.
