Coordinators

Family Math Coordinators are experienced Teacher Leaders with the mathematical knowledge, the pedagogical expertise, and the organizational skills necessary to help other interested individuals become effective Family Math volunteers. Coordinators are former Site Leaders who have been trained by the Esso Family Math Team to assist communities in starting new programs, particularly in terms of providing Family Math Training Workshops.

Coordinators are able to:

  • present the training effectively to a group of previously trained Teacher Leaders;

  • explain why parent involvement is an essential component of a child's mathematical development;

  • identify the key principles of Family Math;

  • demonstrate ways to create and maintain a favorable learning climate for families;

  • explain the structure of the six week Family Math Program;

  • clarify the overall math-related learning goals of the weekly sessions, and the program as a whole;

  • describe how the Family Math Resource Book is organized;

  • model how Family Math activities are carried out;

  • understand the mathematics underlying each activity;

  • identify ways to adapt Family Math to meet the specific needs of the communities and families the programs serve; and,

  • explain how to use and evaluate feedback to improve and tailor the program to meet community needs.

If you are a Teacher Leader who would like to become a Coordinator, you should contact Judi Waters, Nancy Chapple or Linda Adams (see "Contacts" link on the left) to determine when the next Coordinator Training will take place. If there is no training available, please contact Judi, Nancy or Linda with any questions you may have.

As a Coordinator you will find useful teaching hints for yourself and the Site Leaders you are training at the websites we have listed on our Great Math Websites page (see link on the left).
