Program Tools

The Esso Family Math Team has developed a number of tools that we would like to share with other individuals who may be interested in establishing Family Math programs. These tools consist of Resource Books that detail the Esso Family Math sessions as well as Coordinator Training Manuals that provide comprehensive information about setting up community programs and training volunteers. All of these program tools can be downloaded from the "Resources/Ressources" page on this web site (see top navigation bar).

The Coding Used In Our Resource Books

The coding used throughout the Esso Family Math Resource Books (Early Years and Grades 2-5) was originally designed for families in Ontario, Canada. Consequently, the coding used on the "Where's the Math?" pages is based on the 1997 Ontario Ministry of Education and Training - Elementary Mathematics curriculum. The mathematical expectations written next to these codes match learning outcomes, or expectations, common to many other provinces, states, or countries. Therefore, if you are using this program outside Ontario simply match the expectations with those of your own jurisdiction. For your information, Ontario has five mathematics strands:

N
Number Sense and Numeration
M
Measurement
G
Geometry and Spatial Sense
P&A
Patterning and Algebra
DM&P
Data Management and Probability

Ontario also has overall expectations (O) and specific expectations (s). Hence, if for example you see the code P&A (o), it means that this expectation came from the Patterning and Algebra strand, and was an overall expectation. To indicate the grade level of the expectation we have used the coding G2 to indicate grade two. In most circumstances, we have provided an expectation from the kindergarten and grade one curriculum in the Early Years Resource Book, and an expectation from the grade two and grade five curriculum in the Grades 2-5 Resource Book - - the approximate grade ranges for these resources. Junior kindergarten students in Ontario start school at about four years of age, and grade one children are approximately six years old. Grade two students are about seven years of age, and grade five children are approximately ten years old.
