The Importance of Community Building
Family Math sessions take place in selected community sites such as libraries, community centres, church halls and, of course, schools. It is important for parents and their children to feel they are in a safe and relaxed environment where they can make errors, learn from these errors, make sense of the mathematics they are learning, and grow together as families. Building a community is a crucial part of Esso Family Math. Parents and their children must feel comfortable enough to ask questions when they do not understand. Having dinner and talking together helps build such a community. The meal at the beginning of each Family Math session allows parents, children, and Family Math volunteers to get to know one another in an informal setting prior to starting the math activities.
