What is the difference between an AQ and an ABQ?
AQ courses can qualify you to teach in another division/subject, as well as help you to improve your skills in your current teaching. AQ Courses come in two types: Additional Basic Qualifications and Additional Qualifications.
-ABQ courses will allow you to change or add to what you are already qualified to teach, e.g., Primary ABQ, Junior ABQ.
-AQ courses will allow you to expand your skills within the divisions/subjects that you are already qualified to teach, e.g., 3-part courses, PQP.
I have previous experience in an area of education. How can I receive equivalency for it?
Western cannot grant equivalencies. You must submit your documentation to the Ontario College of Teachers for consideration of an equivalency.
I registered in my married name but my previous name is showing in the course.
If you previously were a Western student or applied to Western under one name, we cannot change your name without official documentation, i.e., marriage or birth certificate or driver's license. Fax a copy to us at 519-850-2526 along with your student number, and we will make the change.
I have never taken an online course? What does it entail?
Our courses consist of a web site containing the course content and a discussion area. The discussion area is where you will spend your online time
responding to the Instructor's questions and commenting on your colleague's responses. Each course consists of 100 hours of online work plus 25 hours
of readings and assignments.
The expectation is that you are online participating in the discussion at least once every three days for courses that are 3-months in duration (Intersession/Summer, Fall and Winter) or once every other day for the summer online course (which is only 7 weeks long). The discussion is not "live" so you can be online at any time of the day or night.
Assignments are submitted within the course in a "DropBox". You are evaluated on your Discussion participation and your assignments in each Module.
What are "Educational Rounds"?
All courses include a 24-hour online Educational Rounds Component. The idea of participating in ‘Educational Rounds’ has grown from a desire to provide a space for teachers to come together around difficult cases or issues from their individual practice, and engage in professional dialogue with others in the field in ways that inform and extend the understanding of all involved. A great deal of continuing teacher education and professional development is driven by Ministry initiatives, and subject content. Participating in Educational Rounds is a way for you to tailor your learning to address issues that are of concern and interest to you in your current context, and engage in professional dialogue with other teachers in the course. The AQ student's Educational Rounds Project must focus on the subject area of certification. Specific guidelines and tasks are included in each course.
