Honour Specialist Music  EDUC 5815
Course Description

This course will consist of:
a) a detailed study of curriculum guidelines and requirements for the subject from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 inclusive;
b) an overview of related subject guidelines;
c) child and adolescent development related to the subject;
d) development of programs to meet the special needs of students;
e) program evaluation;
f) student achievement evaluation;
g) print and non-print teaching materials;
h) study or research in the subject and its methodology;
i) a study of the leadership role in the particular subject area.

Admission Requirements

1. A Certificate of Qualification; (It is not necessary to submit a hard copy as proof can be obtained from the Public Register of the Ontario College of Teachers.)

2. A Bachelor of Music (Mus.Ed.), Bachelor of Musical Arts (Mus.Ed.) or Bachelor of Arts (Hon.Mus.Ed) from an Ontario university in a program that requires four years of university study, or the equivalent, to a total of at least 20 full year courses and in which the candidate has obtained at least second class or equivalent standing (B Average - 70%) in at least 9 full year courses in the subject for which the candidate seeks qualification. Candidates without the above but having 20 full-year courses (9 of which are in Music) must have one of the following or a comparable course: Music Education Seminar, Communication in Music or Comparative Studies in Music Education. (An official transcript(s) is required. Fax a copy to us upon registration AND follow up with an official transcript sent directly from the issuing institution. Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.)

3.Evidence of at least two years (388 days) of successful teaching experience, of which at least one year (194 days) is in Ontario in the Honour Specialist area, as certified by the appropriate supervisory officer (superintendent not principal). NOTE: Where candidates are teaching the subject, identified below, in an integrated format, supervisory officers may consider experience where a teacher can demonstrate that significant program and instruction modifications were explicitly planned, implemented and reviewed in the teacher's class: Computers in the Classroom, Dramatic Arts, ESL, FSL, Guidance, Music, Reading, Special Education, Visual Arts (OCT Memorandum; July 14, 2004).Teaching experience MUST BE COMPLETED prior to the first day of the course.

4.The minimum passing grade for an Honour Specialist qualification is 70%.

Applicants to a Combined Honour Specialist program must hold the following:

1. A Certificate of Qualification; (It is not necessary to submit a hard copy as proof can be obtained from the Public Register of the Ontario College of Teachers.)

2. A Bachelor`s degree from an Ontario university, or the equivalent, to a total of at least 20 full year courses-fourteen of these courses must be in a combination of the two subject areas with a minimum of six in either area. (An official transcript(s) is required. Fax a copy to us upon registration AND follow up with an official transcript sent directly from the issuing institution. Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.) One of the following or a comparable course is required: Music Education Seminar, Communication in Music or Comparative Studies in Music Education. A candidate must have at least second class or equivalent standing [B Average - 70%] in the two subjects.

3. Evidence of at least two years (388 days) of successful teaching experience, of which at least one year (194 days) is in Ontario in one of the subject areas in which the Combined Honour Specialist qualification is so as certified by the appropriate supervisory officer. This experience MUST BE COMPLETED prior to the first day of the first course.

4. The minimum passing grade for a Combined Honour Specialist qualification is 70% in each of the two qualification courses.

NOTE: A combined Honour Specialist requires successful completion of BOTH Honour Specialist courses before a recommendation can be forwarded to the Ontario College of Teachers.
