French as a Second Language Part 1  EDUC 5736
Course Description

Current methods of teaching in the various French programs will be the focus of this introductory course. The topics will include reading and writing, communication skills, and the importance of French culture via dialogues, songs, games, and audio-visual aids.

Admission Requirements

1. A Certificate of Qualification, Interim Certificate of Qualification, or Letter of Eligibility (Candidates holding only Technological Studies and not General Studies qualifications are NOT eligible for admission.). (A hard copy is required for the Letter of Eligibility only.)

B.Ed. students graduating in 2009 from an Ontario Faculty of Education may take courses prior to membership with OCT providing that they have met all the requirements to graduate and have registered with OCT. Students from Faculties other than Western must provide proof of successful completion of their B.Ed. program. Students from Faculties outside of Ontario MUST be a member of the Ontario College of Teachers prior to the course start date.

2. At least five full year university courses in French (An official transcript(s) is required. Fax a copy to us upon registration AND follow up with an official transcript sent directly from the issuing institution. Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.) OR for candidates who wish admission but do not have five full year French courses, successful completion of a written and oral French test (see test dates below). *Exemption from the test is available if the following is provided: evidence of successful completion of an oral/written French test from a recognized Faculty of Education OR proof of five full university courses in which the language of instruction was French. Candidates must demonstrate oral and written fluency in French and a thorough knowledge of grammar. A candidate who fails to demonstrate a satisfactory level of oral and written competence, or satisfactory knowledge of grammar, will be required to withdraw from the course;

The fee for the test is $75, payable on the day of the test.

2009 Onsite testing dates are Saturdays April 18, May 30, September 5, and December 5. Phone testing for those outside 200 km will be available Sunday April 19, Saturday, June 6, September 12, and December 12.

NOTE for FSL Part 1 online only:There is an audio component to this course. A course requirement is that you have access to a microphone and preferably a headset. A microphone can usually be purchased for about $10. You will be recording your voice and posting the file to the Discussion Area.
