From the Publishers

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the release of two new books that were sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Education and published by Jossey Bass, an imprint of Wiley & Sons.

DIVERSITY AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES, edited by James A. Banks, was published in August. This book resulted from papers that were presented at the conference "Ethnic Diversity and Citizenship Education in Multicultural Nation-States," held at the Rockefeller Foundation's Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy, in June, 2002. Participants and contributing authors came from 12 nations: Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Israel, Palestine, Japan, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. The book is a part of a project whose goal is to reform citizenship education so that it will be responsive to the needs of cultural, ethnic, and immigrant groups within multicultural nation-states. The book is available from Jossey-Bass, at www.josseybass.com (ISBN 0-7879-6651-7).

The Second Edition of the HANDBOOK OF RESEARCH ON MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION, edited by James A. Banks and Cherry A. McGee Banks, was published in November. The first edition of the HANDBOOK was published in 1995 to provide the education community with an overview and summary of the theory and research in the field. The HANDBOOK received a warm reception from scholars in the U.S. and abroad, receiving the 1997 Multicultural Education Book Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). Twenty-nine chapters from the first edition have been revised and updated, and 20 new chapters were added to the Second Edition. The HANDBOOK may be ordered from Jossey-Bass, at www.josseybass.com (ISBN 0-7879-5915-4).

I am deeply grateful to you for serving as a reviewer for a chapter in DIVERSITY AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES. I hope you will be as pleased with the book as I am.

Sincerely,

James A. Banks

Pathways to Educational Transformation and Development Policies, Plans and Lessons
By Dr. Norrel A. London

A significant turning point in education in developing nations took place as the designated countries acceded to political independence, having crossed the border from centuries of colonial rule. Education was ascribed "human capital" value, and was considered a vital contribution to the planning and development process.

In Pathways to Educational Transformation and Development, Dr. London chronicles this transformation in education in one developing nation, Trinidad & Tobago. Strategies adopted, as well as some triumphs and failures, are highlighted, but the lessons that the episodes impart to the educational development planner are the most enduring features of the book. Pathways is a significant contribution to the international thrust of education development in the aftermath of decolonization.
