Generous Donors - Exceptional Students

2007 Student Awards Luncheon

Our generous donors made possible several new student awards this year. Among them are the Alberta O'Neil Award in Physical Education and the Jessica Campbell Coulson Award established to reward a graduate student working with The Centre for Inclusive Education. Alberta O'Neil is a graduate of London Normal School and a retired teacher. Hers is the first award established for a physical education student. The first recipient of the award, Brandie Shackleton-Verbuyst, was delighted to learn that she had won the award not only because it was a great honor to receive but because her grandmother, Norma Shackleton, also a teacher, was the associate teacher with whom Alberta O'Neil did her practice teaching. Mrs. Shackleton surprised Mrs. O'Neil at the awards ceremony with a bouquet of flowers and a photograph of herself and the young Alberta taken many years ago during her practice teaching session.

The Jessica Jean Campbell Coulson award was established by David Campbell, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Education, to honor his daughter, the late Jessica Coulson. Jessica was also an alumna of the Faculty of Education. The award, won by Hila Balilty, was presented by John Dyson, a man living with a learning disability who credits his life-changing achievements to Jessica Campbell who worked with him and convinced him not to be held back by his disability.
