Administrative Units

Dean's Office

The Dean's Office includes reception and faculty secretarial support in the Main Reception in the lobby and administrative offices at the front of the building on the south side. That area of the building is home to the Dean (Julia O'Sullivan) and the staff who can answer questions about pay, financial procedures, Collective Agreement provisions for both staff and faculty, etc.

Continuing Teacher Education Office

The Continuing Teacher Education Office in Room 1131 provides Professional Learning Courses and Additional Qualifications Courses for Teachers. Teachers who are certified in Ontario take these courses to add additional subjects, grades and expertise to their teaching qualifications. Currently, more than 90% of our 5500 students take fully online courses in seven sessions offered during the year. Approximately 150 courses have been developed. Graduate Education

The Graduate Education Office in Room 1161 offers a Masters in Educational Studies, a Masters in Counselling, and a PhD. The Faculty is also a part of the Joint PhD program (with Lakehead, Windsor and Brock). In September 2004, the Graduate Education department will be offering a pilot online M.Ed. program. The Master's programs can be taken as full-time or part-time. All full-time Masters and PhD students have mailboxes in Room 1161 which are accessible during office hours. Preservice Education Office

The Preservice Office in Room 1166 administers the B.Ed/Dip.Ed. programs, including selections and admissions, student records, timetabling, teaching assignments for part-time instructors, add/drop procedures, student withdrawals, independent study courses, class lists and outlines, grades, distribution of curriculum documents, orientation and administrative support for instructors, and the students' practicum placements.

New Faculty should read through "Policies and Other Information for Preservice Instructors" (restricted access, Education username and password is required). A more complete description of the Preservice program can be found here.

Media and Information Services

This Department provides service to the Faculty in 3 areas:

•AV equipment support for the classrooms and auditorium, including TVs and VCRs, data projectors and computers on carts.

•Development of information services, including computer hardware and software to meet the Faculty's needs, support to troubleshoot hardware / software problems, technical support for online courses and websites, computer lab bookings, network administration, and computer program development for the Faculty.

•Media Production Centre support, including sale of supplies such as chalk, markers, pencils and Bristol board; paper cutting, binding, and laminating services; assistance in preparing and coordinating displays and presentations. The Faculty of Education has two caretakers. If you need to contact someone in custodial services, please contact Main Reception.

The Education Library

The Education Library is located in the John George Althouse Faculty of Education Building in the circular structure on the north end of the building. The Library's academic and scholarly collection includes: monographs, journals, Faculty of Education theses, dissertations and directed research papers and ERIC microfiche.

The Curriculum Resource Collection (CRC) is another major component of the Education Library. This collection includes: print and non-print teaching resources, French materials, provincial curriculum guidelines, local and regional school board curriculum, documents, Ministry authorized resources, lesson plans, kits, course profiles and exemplars, textbooks, videos, audio CDs, DVDs, audio-cassette tapes, big books, manuals, puppets, games and activities.

To access any electronic research resources, it is necessary to use your UWO Personal Computer Account and cryptic password. The Althouse Press

The Althouse Press publishes and distributes books to the university community, other publishers, and scholars. The mandate of The Althouse Press to publish scholarly books and research monographs in education; professional books and materials for educators in elementary schools, secondary schools, and faculties of education; and, audio-visual and other materials in related fields. The Centre for Inclusive Education

The Centre for Inclusive Education, located in the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario, is a research association composed of faculty members, research officers, and graduate students who share an interest in inclusive education research. The goal of the Centre is to encourage collaborative investigations of theories and practices in an effort to enhance the educational opportunities of all students with exceptionalities. The Centre is committed to sharing research findings and resources with academics, educators, and families. More information on the centre can be found here.

Esso Family Math Centre

The Esso Family Math Project is a community-based program to support families who would like their children to experience success in math. The goal is to facilitate community volunteers to assist parents and their children in learning mathematics together, using the context of the real world to present mathematics in a meaningful and enjoyable fashion. Games and manipulative materials are employed to move mathematics from the abstract world of symbolism to concrete reality. The Centre attempts to foster positive attitudes towards a subject that is often perceived as incomprehensible, especially by people who are at risk. More information can be found here.

Western Centre for Mathematics Education

The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education continue to work together under the umbrella of the Western Centre for Mathematics Education to develop mathematics education programs and community outreach initiatives. The goal of the Western Centre for Mathematics Education is to enhance understanding, interest and participation in all levels of mathematics, for students, teachers and educators, and the public. The Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children

The Centre is one of an alliance of five centres in Canada initially funded by the federal government following the Montréal Massacre. The London Centre is a collaborative venture of Fanshawe College, The University of Western Ontario and The London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse (representing approximately thirty agencies). The purpose of the Centre is to promote the development of community-centred action research on violence against women and children. More information about the Centre can be found here.
