Faculty set to welcome visiting scholar

Professor David Little, Fellow Emeritus of Trinity College Dublin and this summer’s visiting scholar, will arrive at the Faculty of Education on July 8. Professor Little has played a key role in the development and dissemination of the European Language Portfolio, and is currently Chair of the European Language Portfolio Validation Committee. The invitation to Professor Little was extended because several second language education researchers in the faculty are involved in a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) project funded by the Ministry of Education. Professors Majhanovich, Taylor, Smith and Faez have been involved in evaluating the implementation of CEFR in different French as a Second Language (FSL) programs in nine different school boards across the province (i.e., core French, French immersion and extended French).

Professor Little has made important contributions to international discussion of the theory and practice of second language learning. Since the 1980’s he has contributed regularly to the Council of Europe’s work in language education. Professor Little’s presentations are scheduled for 10 am at the Faculty of Education in Room 1010:

Public lecture (July 15): "The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the European Language Portfolio: potential, challenges, experience"

Seminar 1 (July 22): "Language learner autonomy: from practice to theory"

Seminar 2 (July 29): "Using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages to develop a second/foreign language curriculum"

Seminar 3 (August 5): "How to design a European Language Portfolio"
