International Radiology Conference
In the fall of 2006, shortly after a partnership was established between the
Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry,
and the Faculty of Education, Dr. Rethy Chhem and Dr. Kathy Hibbert began discussing plans
to initiate an international conference with a focus on scholarship in Radiology Education
as a new venue to both share the results of our learning in year one of the partnership, and
second, to bring together interested professionals in a way that could further stimulate dialogue
and research in this area. A formal call for the conference was issued, a web-site developed
and on August 24, 2007, the 1st Annual International Conference, Expanding Scholarship in Radiology
Education was held at London Hall, University of Western Ontario, London, ON. We were delighted
to welcome 71 attendees to the first conference, from as far away as China and Singapore, in
addition to many parts of Canada and the USA. Of the 71, 17 were Residents from our own department.
We were honoured with opening remarks from the Dean of Medicine, Dr. Carol Herbert, and with
closing remarks from the Dean of Education, Dr. Julia O’Sullivan.
The results of this
successful day include new international connections for collaboration, plans to launch a Society
for Scholarship in Radiology Education through the Centre for Education in Radiology NM, and
an offer from a colleague to host the 2nd Annual International Conference, Expanding Scholarship
in Radiology Education in the summer of 2008.
