Admission Requirements for Graduate Studies in Education

Ph.D. (Education Studies) Degree

The minimum standard for admission is a research based Master's degree in Education or equivalent from an accredited university. Normally admission will be granted only to applicants who have an "A" standing in their previous graduate work and who submit evidence of previous scholarly research, such as a Master's thesis, Directed Research Project, or Qualifying Research Paper acceptable to the Doctoral Admissions Committee. Applicants are required to submit acceptable letters of reference from three individuals familiar with the applicant's research and other scholarly achievement, as well as evidence of appropriate professional qualifications and work in an educational setting. Students with Master's degrees and an excellent academic record in a related field, who have experience in education and teaching in universities, colleges, or organizations other than public schools, and who may not have professional teaching credentials or qualifications, will also be considered for admission. All applicants will be required to submit a clear statement of plans for future study and research. Students may be required to make up for any deficiencies in their specific backgrounds by taking appropriate additional course work.

Admission to the program is granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Chair of Graduate Education of the Faculty of Education, who shall be advised by the Doctoral Admissions Committee and consult with other individuals as appropriate.

M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology) Degree

Candidates for admission to the program shall meet the following requirements.

1. A four-year degree (20 full courses); (honours degree preferred) from an approved university, with normally at least a B (minimum 70%) standing in the final two years of study or equivalent. One academic year of professional preparation for teaching, or its equivalent, can be used to meet the requirement of the fourth year, but it is not considered when calculating the average mark for admission.

2. A minimum of one year experience (paid and/or volunteer) or the equivalent in the helping professions (teaching, counselling, nursing, community service, or related activities).

3. A minimum of five courses in the social sciences. Of these five, a minimum of three full (or six half) courses in the field of psychology and at least two (or four half) additional courses in psychology, sociology, anthropology, or social work. Courses in other fields, such as nursing, religion, and education that are primarily psychological (e.g., classroom management, family studies) will also be considered. In addition, it would be advisable to have a background in elementary statistical methods.

Decisions for the Counselling Psychology program are based on application materials, as well as participation in a Group Selection Evening and a personal interview.  Approximately 60 applicants who meet the minimum admissions requirements will be invited (mid to late February) to attend a Group Selection Evening scheduled for Wednesday March 5th, 2008 (6:00 pm - 9:00 pm).  Please plan to arrive by 5:45 pm.  Refreshments will be served following the formal portion of the evening and it will draw to a close by 9:30 pm.  Approximately 24 candidates will be selected from the Group Selection Evening for personal interviews, which will be held on Thursday March 6th and Friday March 7th.  For candidates who are traveling to London from outside of the Southwestern Ontario region and need to make travel/accommodation arrangements to attend  the Group Selection Evening, and who are selected for a personal interview, we will try to schedule personal interviews for  March 6th.  Those closer to London will be scheduled on March 7th.
